Posted April 05, 2019 07:04:24 A coalition of rebel groups has seized the border crossing between Iran and Lebanon, after a week of fighting, the head of Iran’s military intelligence agency said on Sunday.
Qasem Soleimani, head of the Quds Force intelligence agency, said on the Iranian state-run Al Alam TV channel that the armed groups have launched a coordinated attack on Iran’s border crossing with Lebanon.
The border is one of the main sources of supply for the Lebanese army, and its capture would be a blow to Lebanon’s hopes of stemming a devastating war with Iran.
The armed groups’ offensive comes amid a surge in the number of Iranian-backed groups fighting the Lebanese armed forces.
Iran and Lebanon are in a war of words that has already claimed the lives of more than 40 Lebanese soldiers and civilians.
The Quds force has said it has destroyed at least 50 Iranian-made tank and fighter planes and about 20 Iranian-supplied artillery pieces in its war with Hezbollah, the armed group that backs Syrian President Bashar Assad.
